The Evolution of Studio Rates

To understand the value of something your have to understand where it’s coming from.

Twenty years ago we’d spend several thousand dollars a day making a record.  The state of the technology was such that it took a half dozen Engineers, Technicians and Producers to keep everything rolling.  This could go on for a month or two before anyone even started to worry about blowing the budget.  We had six and even seven figure budgets but not a lot of artists getting produced at a world class level.

Ten years ago when newer technologies started to come in, it became obvious that really great sounding, world class records could be made for as little as $30,000 - $50,000.  While this is still a five figure deal it was a significant improvement over the big budgets that were being thrown around before.  Remember these production costs are advances that the artist has to recoup before getting royalties.

Now we come to an era of file swapping and home studios.  Having been through the whole evolution of studio pricing I know where to cut the fat and where to hold to traditions that produce real results.  Being ultra efficient and absolutely uncompromising in the quality of the recording is the very core of what Bad Habit Recordings is about.

At this point we are going forward by going back.  “Live in the studio” is the way that Elvis and the early Beatles used to make records.  For this approach to work it is essential that the band be very tight and well rehearsed.  Being out on tour is excellent preparation.

Bad Habit Rec. always welcomes traditional “lock outs” as well, however our current business plan revolves around the very cost effective “Live in the Studio” four song EP approach.
